Models and social impact
‘I actually ended up at DNB a bit by accident. After graduating, I wasn't sure which direction I wanted to go in. Then a friend invited me to come along to a DNB trainee programme meet & greet. I wasn't expecting it at all, but I immediately found it really interesting. The appeal? At DNB, it’s not about profit, but about social impact. And the open, analytical working environment and the focus on sharing knowledge make it an inspiring place for me. I decided to apply for a traineeship, just to see how far I would get. I gradually became more and more enthusiastic, and when I was hired I was absolutely thrilled.
Climate-related risks
My current placement is with the Capital & Actuarial Expertise Centre, where we supervise insurers. My focus is on the models we use to assess risks, such as climate-related risks from extreme weather events. Large insurers are allowed to develop their own models to calculate their capital requirement, but DNB must approve them. We test whether their estimates are realistic and whether they incorporate risks appropriately. That means I dive deep into the models, but also interact with insurers. The combination of analytical work and social responsibility is what makes things so interesting.
I am eager to gain broad-based experience. Above all, I want to discover where I can make the most impact.
Learning by doing
I studied Econometrics, with specialisations in finance and climate, but with almost no actuarial subjects. I'm learning about supervision primarily by doing supervision. Fortunately, my team has mentored trainees before, so they know exactly which tasks they can entrust to me. And they really take the time to explain things. I am a full-fledged member of the team. I also learn a lot from my fellow trainees. We have lunch together, set up activities and follow a joint development programme. That's how you quickly forge a bond.
Socially relevant
It will soon be time for my next placement. DNB has three main branches: Central Bank, Supervision and Resolution, and I think it would be interesting to gain experience in all of them. My climate specialisation can be relevant in any domain, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be part of each placement. Above all, I want to discover where I can make the most impact. If you find this sector interesting and you care about doing socially relevant work, then DNB is the right place for you. This traineeship offers opportunities for broad-based learning and growth. And with panoramic views of Amsterdam from the 16th floor of our new building, every working day is special anyway.’
